How to fix a leaking tap
Leaking tap can result in hundreds of pounds in water bills only in the course of a single year. However, you can easily fix a leaking tap and in order to do so, simply follow these easy steps:
- The first step is to identify the type of the leaking tap: the most common taps are either pillar taps or ceramic disk taps. The pillar taps are the ones that require you to turn the head gear a few times for the water to start flowing, while the ceramic disk taps are quarter turn taps. If you have dripping from the spout pillar tap, you will have to replace the washer and if you have dripping from the spout ceramic disk tap, you will most likely have to replace the central cartridge.
- If your tap is leaking from the top or from the body, then the problem is likely caused by rubber seal or the gland nut. Before trying to replace either of these, turn off the tap, remove the cover and the handle and then either replace the rubber O-seal or tighten the gland nut.
- Leaks from the base of the swivel spout are typically caused by the seal, which is also easily replaceable.
- In case of more serious leaks that are from the hidden piping, you should call a plumber.
If you are trying to fix leaking tap for a first time, you should always turn off the water supply to the taps, even though it might not be completely necessary. However, if you do this if you perform any of these simple operations incorrectly, at least you won’t flood your entire flat or house. It is also preferable to try to fix leaking taps when you have no other engagements and have enough free time to visit the hardware stores and buy spares and also purchase any tools that you might need.
